There was plenty of excitement on the streets of Mullingar today (Wednesday) as Irish rugby star Robbie Henshaw cut the ribbon on a new Vision Ireland store.

The Athlone native attracted plenty of intrigue among the watching public as he opened the national sight loss agency’s latest premises along the midlands town’s Dominik Street.

Henshaw’s appearance came just days after the 30-year-old lined out for Leinster as Leo Cullen’s side brushed aside La Rochelle in the Investec Champions Cup at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium last Saturday.

The all-action centre joined forces with the charity that sells used clothes and second hand furniture in support of over 50,000 people living with sight loss in Ireland.

In urging the wider public to “Skip the skip,” and donate their usable pre-loved furniture and homewares to Vision Ireland, Henshaw said there was plenty of merit in the sustainability led campaign.

“Donating your furniture instead of throwing it out not only benefits the planet but will also help Vision Ireland raise more funds to empower people who are blind or vision impaired across the country,” he said.

Tara Healy, Area Manager of Vision Ireland supported those calls and said the need for donations had arguably never been greater.

“While we’ve seen a fantastic response to our collection of high-quality pre-loved fashion and homewares, there’s a greater need for furniture donations,” she said.

“Every piece you give can make a substantial difference.”
