Set at a wedding in Westport, Co Mayo, Irish Wish was filmed on location in the west coast town, at the Cliffs of Moher and in Co Wicklow at Lough Tay and Killruddery House.
Lohan, who has Irish roots which may trace back to Cork and Galway, said she enjoyed her time here in Ireland while filming and stayed in Dalkey.
“Ireland’s so beautiful. I’d never been, [but] my grandfather’s from there. We stayed in this little town called Dalkey. The people are so nice, and the Guinness pies were amazing,” she said.
Irish Wish sees Lohan play “shy” book editor Maddie Kelly, who has to put her feelings aside to be a bridesmaid at the Westport wedding of her best friend and the love of her life.
It follows Maddie as she makes a wish for true love in the days leading up to the wedding, unwittingly waking up as the bride to-be.
The movie is Lohan’s second rom-com collaboration with streaming giant Netflix following the release of Falling for Christmas in 2022.
“She’s been ghostwriting for the writer she works for and she’s hopelessly in love with him, and she’s expecting him to love her back,” Lohan said of her character.
“Maddie’s [one of the only] characters that I’ve played [who’s] a woman on her own making her way in the world.
“We shaped her in a way that she was a bit more insecure in the beginning, and then she grows throughout the movie, and by the end, she really comes into her own.
“It’s important to put yourself first and know your worth. If you know you deserve better, go for it and get it.”
Lohan is joined by cast members including Ed Speleers, Alexander Vlahos, Jane Seymour, Elizabeth Tan and Ayesha Curry.
She spoke about her newfound bond with Curry, who is the wife of basketball star Stephen Curry, and getting the chance to work with her younger brother Dakota who also makes an appearance.
“Whenever [I’m] with family, I’m really bad at not cracking up for some reason. I make funny faces when I’m off camera just to mess with them,” Lohan said.
Some are bracing themselves for another round of dodgy Irish accents, anticipating a repeat of the “twas he who kissed me!” fiasco from 2020’s Wild Mountain Thyme.
Set in rural Co Mayo, Rosemary Muldoon (Emily Blunt) deals with unrequited love for Anthony Reilly (Jamie Dornan), whose Irish accent is somehow worse than his father Tony’s, played by Christopher Walken.
Director John Patrick Shanley dismissed Irish people’s criticisms of the movie, however, and said he made the movie for an international audience.
“If you try to get the Irish to love you, no good will come of it,” he told Variety.
“I’m making this movie for everybody else and all the people who want to go to Ireland.”
Irish Wish streams on Netflix from March 15, “just in time for St Patrick’s Day”.
