Pierce Brosnan says the last time he saw his Navan home it was ‘filled with beer cans’ as he offers advice to new Bond Aaron Taylor-Johnson

Speaking on The Ray D’Arcy Show on RTÉ Radio 1, Brosnan told Taylor-Johnson to “be bold” as he takes on the iconic role.

Irish actor Brosnan played the secret agent 007 in four films between 1995 and 2002. Taylor-Johnson looks set to take over the mantle from Brosnan’s successor Daniel Craig.

“I think the man has the chops and the talent and the charisma to play Bond, very much so,” he said.

A connection already exists between Brosnan and Taylor-Johnson. They starred together alongside Carey Mulligan and Susan Sarandon in The Greatest in 2009.

“I read the news about his possibilities of being a Bond so I would definitely tip my hat to the fellow.

“Be bold, go out there and have a great time. Just love it, just go for it. He can do it.”

Asked about his hometown in Navan, Co Meath, Brosnan said he hasn’t visited in some time and his family home has been torn down.

“I read that they tore the house down there a while ago. It was a bungalow on the banks of the River Boyne that my grandfather built.

“The last time I saw it, it was a wreck of a place. I went there with my mother and it was a lovely wee bungalow back in the day but on the particular day I saw it, it was filled with beer cans. It was an awful mess.

“Everything changes, everything falls apart. I thank everybody who wanted to keep it but something you just can’t keep. It’s a fond memory.”

Brosnan spoke to host Ray D’Arcy about his IFTA nominated performance in The Last Rifleman.

Brosnan spoke about working with director Terry Loane on the film and said the pair had been trying to work together for years.

“He brought me this jewel of a film which is really based on a true story of this gentleman Bernard Jordan who left the old people’s home. He was a World War Two veteran and he wanted to celebrate his comrades in Normandy, left the home and it was on the news.”

Though just 70-years-old himself, the character Brosnan played based on Mr Jordan was aged 92 in the film.

“There is a reflection… slowly as you got up, you’d open your eyes and there was this other you before you.

“You have the costume, you have the stick, you have the environment, you have the preparation and imagination that goes into making it.”
