After one hole of a sudden-death playoff, Austria’s Maximilian Steinlechner wins the 2024 Gösser Open with a par on the 1st playoff hole.
Steinlechner, alongside Spain’s Asier Aguirre Izcue, concluded their final round at Golf Club Erzherzog Johann tied for the lead and, therefore, took part in a 2-way sudden-death playoff thanks to their final score of 17 under-par. In 3rd place at 15 under-par Italy’s Enrico Di Nitto.
Steinlechner mainly plays on the Challenge Tour, but nonetheless, he was very excited to be able to compete this week in his home country. After his win, he was very pleased as this was his first win in his home country.
“So starting the third round, I knew the winning score was going to be low as the weather forecast was good. The few more putts that dropped today made the difference between me shooting 64 today and the first two rounds. In the playoff, I did the exact same thing as I did in regulation. Played my game and followed my strategy and got lucky that my opponent made a bogey while I made a solid par. It feels great to have my first win here in Austria, it’s great. I’m going to go enjoy it.”
Robert Moran was best of the Irish on eleven-under-par after a fine final round of 68 saw him creep into the top-10.
The Castle golfer was bogey-free, carding four birdies in his first ten holes and he moves into 15th on the Order of Merit.
Paul McBride came home with a 70 to take 18th place on nine-under-par while Marc Boucher was three shots further back.
