Shane Lowry WITB May 2024: Irish Pro’s Golf Gears Explored

It was his crowning achievement, the 2019 Open win, that solidified Shane Lowry‘s status as a golfing star. He has already made his name in major championship history. In the third round of the ongoing PGA Championship, he shot a record-tying 62 to get into contention on the final day. His 62 was the lowest round in a major championship. Interestingly, in just one week, he has transcended from T47 at the Wells Fargo Championship to be in the top 10 (until the third round) at the PGA Championship.

Lowry made a career-high 161 feet of putts on Saturday. As of Saturday, he also led the field in Strokes Gained: Putting, gaining approximately 11 strokes over the first three rounds at Valhalla. More than half of those came on Saturday. What helped him showcase such stellar skills was his equipment. Let’s delve deeper to know what he carries in his bag.

Shane Lowry’s bag consists of equipment from various brands

The current 43rd OWGR rank uses a Srixon ZX5 MKII driver with an 8.5-degree loft. It helps him launch the drives that fly higher, farther, and straighter. It is priced at $499. The shaft fitted to it is a Mitsubishi Diamana White 70 X. The shaft retails for around $350. It has DIALEAD Pitch Fiber that offers outstanding strength and increased energy transfer to the golfer. The tough QURE Resin System of the shaft allows for superior strength and stability, in turn helping the golfer showcase better skills on the greens.

Lowry uses TaylorMade Stealth Plus fairway wood with a 19-degree loft. It delivers precision playability and fast ball speeds, even with increased loft. The price comes in the range of $349–$429. The Irish golfer uses a graphite Design Tour AD-DI 8X shaft for his 3-wood. 

Moving on to the irons, the 36-year-old uses a 3-iron Srixon ZX MK II utility with a 20-degree loft and a Nippon NS ProModus3 Tour shaft. It comes with a low center of gravity and long-iron forgiveness for elevating launches. The utility iron costs around $240.

Moreover, for a desired trajectory and workability in his shots, he uses Srixon ZX5 MKII (4-5) and ZX7 MKII (6-PW) irons with a KBS Tour 130 X shaft. The market value of the set is around $1200. This is not all that Lowry has in his bag. He recently changed his putter, and it has been turning out to be a good thing for him. 

Lowry’s wedges and putters

Shane Lowry uses a Cleveland RTX 6 ZipCore Tour Rack (50-10 MID, 54-10 MID) wedge. Priced at $169, and with a raised moment of inertia, it aids him in making accurate short-distance lob shots. Cleveland RTX Full Face (58-8) wedge also bags in his armory. It costs around $140. This gives him the optimal flight he needs and an incredible spin for his on-green skills. Both his wedges are paired with a KBS Tour Wedge X Black shaft. 

Lowry relied heavily on variations of Odyssey’s famous 2-ball putter design throughout his career. It seemed the golfer and his two-ball designs were inseparable. But it changed ahead of the 2024 Zurich Classic team event. Where he paired up with fellow Irishman Rory McIlroy. There he switched to a new TaylorMade Spider Tour Z mallet putter with a SuperStroke Zenergy Pistol 1.0 grip, which has a value of around $350. And the result? He and McIlroy went on to win the Zurich Classic.

“I’ve been struggling on the greens, and I just needed something with a fresh look. It has a different neck on it as well, so it moves a bit differently, but it’s similar. It has a white line on the back of it [like my 2-ball], and it’s mallet style. So it’s not too drastic of a change. I just picked it up on the putting green, and I liked the look of it, so I was like, ‘Let’s give it a go.’” Lowry told GolfWRX.com during 2024’s Wells Fargo Championship when talking about his new putter. He additionally uses a Srixon Z-Star XV ball and a Golf Pride Tour Velvet grip for his clubs.
