Ireland has formally recognised the State of Palestine, defying objections from Israel. The decision was announced on Tuesday, May 28, following a cabinet meeting where the government approved the measure.

A government statement confirmed the recognition, stating, “The Government recognises Palestine as a sovereign and independent state and agreed to establish full diplomatic relations between Dublin and Ramallah.”

As part of this decision, Ireland will appoint an Ambassador to the State of Palestine and open a full Embassy in Ramallah.

Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris emphasised the importance of this decision for maintaining hope for peace in the region. “This decision of Ireland is about keeping hope alive. It is about believing that a two-state solution is the only way for Israel and Palestine to live side by side in peace and security,” Harris stated.

He also addressed the ongoing situation in Gaza, urging Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to heed international calls for an end to the humanitarian crisis. “I again call on Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel to listen to the world and stop the humanitarian catastrophe we are seeing in Gaza,” Harris added.

Ireland’s recognition of Palestine marks a bold step in international relations, aligning with a growing number of countries advocating for a two-state solution to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
