Galway United have signed former Republic of Ireland defender Greg Cunningham in a major coup for John Caulfield’s side.
Cunningham brings a wealth of experience from his time in England.
He has made over 350 appearances in the top three divisions with Manchester City, Bristol City, Cardiff City and most recently Preston North End before departing at the end of the season in May.
Cunningham featured 12 times in the Championship last campaign.
He left Mervue United to go to Man City at just 16 years of age and spent 17 years in English football in total.
The 33-year-old won four caps for Ireland under Giovanni Trappatoni, making his debut against Algeria in 2010.
Cunningham had been training with United in recent weeks before putting pen to paper today.
He said: “It means a lot, being away for so long, it’s very pleasing to be back home. I’m going to give it everything I got and I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead.
“When I’m at home I try to get to as many games as I can. I’ve always kept an eye on how Galway have been doing and they’ve made a great start to life in the Premier Division.
“It’s an exciting time for the club and it means a lot to be here
“In general I have always given everything every time I’m on the pitch. I think I understand the game quite well. I’ll try to give everything for the club and express my experience for the boys and showcase that on the pitch.
“As I’ve got older I think it’s vital as a senior player to help out younger players as much as you can.
“I’m really looking forward to playing in Eamonn Deacy Park. From going to the games recently I’ve seen how vocal and passionate the fans have been. They’ve been the 12th man for the club and I’m looking forward to playing in front of them.”
Cunningham could make his debut against Longford Town in the FAI Cup this weekend with an away league fixture versus Sligo Rovers to follow next week.
