Limerick man hoping for unique double in All-Ireland final hurling and football finals

Must read

WHILE many Limerick people will be mostly indifferent to Sunday’s All-Ireland hurling final and next week’s All-Ireland football final, one man is invested in both for exceptional reasons.

Limerick man Seán Treacy, from Granagh is hugely invested in the outcome of this weekend’s All-Ireland hurling clash between Cork and Clare because his nephew and godson, Cormac O’Brien, is on the Cork panel.

Cormac is not Mr Treacy’s only sport-driven nephew, however, as Galway football star Shane Walsh, too, is his nephew. This means not one, but two All-Ireland finals for the Sean to enjoy

“My sister Joanne is Cormac’s mam and my sister Mary is Shane’s mam – I’m very close to both of them,” Mr Treacy said.

“It is a great honour to see both Cormac and Shane involved, in both hurling and football, it’s fantastic. I hope both of them will be winners with their counties.”

Working as a local butcher in Nagles Eurospar, Bruff, Mr Treacy said he will be watching the two matches “at home, cheering my two nephews on”.

“When Limerick would be playing there would be a bit of rivalry alright, but Cork beat us fair and square! We all take it in good spirits.”

Cormac O’Brien of Newtownshandrum is 23 and on the Cork extended panel and Galway stellar star, Shane Walsh, is 30-years-old.

Cork will face Clare in their first All-Ireland hurling final since 2013 this Sunday, July 21 while Galway are set to play Armagh in the All-Ireland senior football final on July 28.
