Second staging of revived St. Anne’s Senior Scratch Cup draws near – Irish Golfer Magazine

Must read

After its successful revival in 2023, the St. Anne’s Senior Scratch Cup is back and takes place on the historic Dublin links on Bull Island on August 2nd.

Founded as a nine-hole course back in 1921, it was extended to 18 holes in the latter part of the 20th Century and officially opened in 1989. Part of the UNESCO Wildlife Sanctuary that is Bull Island – a man-made island just to the north of the mouth of the River Liffey – it lies just five miles from Dublin City Centre and the panoramic clubhouse offers views of the city, the Dublin mountains to the south and the Irish sea to the east.

Evolution at St. Anne’s has been a constant in the interim and the links is reaping the fruits of significant investment in recent years.

A €3,000 prize fund will be up for grabs for the second staging of the Scratch Cup which is proudly supported by PwC and LHK Group, and a strong field is expected to attend once again.

Played over 36 holes, the revival in 2023 saw Carton House’s Cathal MacCanna emerge victorious in strong winds after laying the foundations for victory with a superb three-under 68 in round one and hanging on for dear life as the wind switched to a devilishly difficult easterly crosswind in round two.

Leinster Interprovincial stars Jack McDonnell and Paul Coughlan finished second and third respectively in 2023, and given the calibre of the field that assembled and the defending champions set to return, entries will be confined to the lowest 60 players per WHS as at July 30th, the closing date for entries.

A lot of work went into reviving this once great event and this ensured its return was a great success, and the 2024 staging promises to bw nothing short of its equal.
