Lavin and Lowry Selected as Team Ireland Flag Bearers – Sport for Business

Must read

Sarah Lavin and Shane Lowry have been named as Ireland’s Flag Bearers at tonight’s Opening Ceremony for the Paris Olympic Games.

They join a list of sporting stars that have been honoured in similar fashion over recent years.

Kellie Harrington and Brendan Irvine carried the flag in Tokyo in 2021, Paddy Barnes in Rio in 2016, Katie Taylor in London in 2012, Ciara Peelo in Beijing in 2008, and Niall Griffin in Athens in 2004.

Sonia O’Sullivan was the last track athlete to carry in Sydney in 2000, and no golfer had previously had the honour.

Coco Gauff and LeBron James will carry for Team USA, while Tom Daley and Helen Glover will do so for our nearest neighbours, Team GB.

Each country must nominate a male and a female flag bearer, in keeping with the gender balance that the Olympics have as a core value.

Lavin and Lowry will be on the boat leading Ireland’s record-sized team of 133. The ceremony will take place tonight at 18:30 live on RTÉ TV.

Sport for Business will host its annual Sponsorship Showcase event in Dublin on Thursday morning, October 10th. This is one of many events planned for the remainder of 2024.
