In the midst of the Olympics it is harder to keep on top of everything else happening in sport but one moment that stands out brightly from the weekend is that Ireland have been crowned as the Men’s European U20 Champions in Lacrosse.
Ireland beat England, 10-7 in the final of the Championship in Wroclaw, Poland on Saturday evening.
Ireland claimed its first championship in the second edition of the event, dethroning the defending champion England, which won in 2019 in Prague.
The game itself was a trade-off of runs in the first two periods, with England cutting a 6-3 deficit to 6-5 at halftime. Then Ireland reeled off a four-goal run to pull away, and saw out a late England effort.
Darcy Rybinski led Ireland’s attack with four goals and two assists while Emmet McDermott added two goals and three assists.
Christopher Burnetta chipped in two goals and two assists. Ireland’s defense only allowed nine shots on goal the entire game.
The Championship had everyone from Sweden and Germany to Italy and Denmark taking part.
The Irish team will now go on to compete at the 2025 World Lacrosse Men’s U20 Championship in Korea, with sponsorship a priority to give them the best chance of competing as one of the best in the world.
Sport for Business will host its inaugural Children and Sport Conference in Dublin on Thursday, September 19th, with the support of Allianz Ireland and Sport Ireland. This is one of many events planned for the remainder of 2024.
