Ireland’s first medallist of Paris 2024 will return to action on day five of the Games as Mona McSharry sets her sights on the women’s 200m breaststroke competition.
McSharry will be looking to build on her heroic exploits in the 100m breastroke final on Monday, where the Sligo swimmer took home the bronze at a packed La Defense Arena with a time of 1:05.59.
She will be in lane five of the pool for the first heat in the morning, scheduled to start at 10am, with the woman who took the gold on Monday night, Tatjana Smith, alongside her in lane four.
Smith is also the Olympic record holder in this discipline, setting a time of 2:18.95 in Tokyo in 2021.
However, McSharry will be hopeful of reaching another semi-final, with that race slated for between 08.51pm and 21.05pm Wednesday evening.
Elsewhere, Kellie Harrington returns to the ring for a quarter-final bout against Angie Valdas Pana of Colombia. The 2020 Olympic gold medallist put in a masterclass in the last 16, easing to victory over Italy’s Alessia Mesiano on Monday.
A win will guarantee the Dubliner back-to-back Olympic medals.
Two other members of Team Ireland are also on the hunt for back-to-back podium places.
The men’s lightweight double sculls team of Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy dominated their heat on Sunday morning, finishing in a time of 6:34.12, seven seconds ahead of second-placed Norway.
The reigning Olympic champions compete in the semi-final this morning between 10.14am and 10.34am.
