We’ve had the Molinaris and the Højgaards on the DP World Tour, the Koepkas on LIV, and the Jutanugarns and the Korda sisters on the LPGA Tour, so golfing siblings competing with and alongside one another in pro golfing events is nothing new, but two siblings and a parent forming a threeball? I’ll wager that’s not happened too frequently.
But it’s happening this week on the Korn Ferry Tour as Scott, Luke and Trevor Gutschewski have all been grouped together at the Pinnacle Bank Championship in their hometown of Omaha, Nebraska.
Dad Scott is a three-time Korn Ferry Tour winner who has played 154 PGA Tour events, registering one top-five finish, while eldest son Luke is a Junior at Iowa State University and was co-medalist in the strokeplay qualifying at the 2022 U.S. Amateur, while 17-year-old Trevor is the reigning U.S. Junior Amateur champion, having come through a gruelling 23-hole match in the round of 64, took out the number one seed in the round of 32, and defeated the number two seed 2&1 in the final match.
Trevor’s U.S. Junior Amateur success earned him a sponsor’s invitation, while Luke won the Nebraska Closed Qualifier to take his place in the field, and Scott’s PGA Tour ranking deemed him eligible, though at 47, he no longer plays full time and is making his first Korn Ferry Tour start of 2024.
But in recognition of this unusual scenario, tournament organisers have made it easy for family members to follow the progress of each of the three by handing them a 9:57 am starting time for Thursday’s first round.
With major family bragging rights at stake, will the old teach the young bucks a trick or two? Or will one of the younger generation step up to the plate and set down a big marker for their professional ambitions in the coming years?
“I thought there was a chance at some point that Luke and I may kind of cross paths depending on how long I could still walk and everything but, yeah, Trevor was definitely a huge surprise,” Scott told KMTV.
They say good things come in threes, and that’s certainly the case when it comes to the Gutschewskis and golf.
