Ireland name over 40s squad to play England

Must read

JOHN MOONEY is one of four new faces in the Ireland Over 40’s squad that will play England at Merrion on Thursday August 22nd (12.30pm).

The all-rounder, currently starring for Strabane in the North West, is joined for the first time by Trevor Britton, David Scanlon and Albert van der Merwe,

Mooney won 182 caps for Ireland between 2001 and 2015 and is looking forward once again to wearing the green of his country.

“I’ve been following the progress of the Veterans Cricket Association of Ireland closely over the past year or so and I’m glad of the opportunity to play for them,” said Mooney, one of eight senior internationals in the 13-player squad.

“They did well in the recent Triple Crown event in Wales beating England and Scotland, playing some good cricket.

“Playing England in the last game of the season always gives it an extra edge, and it promises to be a great day out for everyone at Anglesea Road.

“It will be great to catch up with a few former team-mates and hopefully we will have a win to reflect on after the game.”

The match will be a 45-overs contest, and the Veterans Cricket Association of Ireland and Irish Cricket Association are coming together to arrange a BBQ for players and spectators afterwards. There will also be a special music performance from a very special guest.

Manager Greg Molins paid tribute to those who had made the match possible.

“It certainly should be a great occasion for all, and we are very grateful for our new match day sponsor Azets who join a group of generous sponsors who have helped us develop our playing programme over the last couple of years.”
