Paris 2024: Irish in action on Day 14 of Olympic Games

Must read

Rhasidat Adeleke will become the first Irish woman to ever compete in an Olympic sprint final on Day 14 of the Paris Games – and the 21-year-old from Tallaght will be targeting a medal at the Stade de France.

Adeleke secured an automatic place in the 400m final, finishing second in her Wednesday night semi-final with a time of 49.94.

Her time was the sixth fastest of the eight across the three semi-finals and she will be hoping for a big improvement to be in podium contention.

Ireland will also be involved in two semi-finals on the track on Friday morning with Mark English targeting an 800m final at 10.30am and Sarah Lavin in the 100m hurdles shortly after at 11.05am.

Also on the track will be Ireland’s women’s 4x400m team, who will take part in the second semi-final heat at 9.52am.

The four athletes chosen to compete in the semi-final are Sophie Becker, Phil Healy, Kelly McGrory and Sharlene Mawdsley.

Kate O’Connor will wrap up a busy day in the Stade de France for Team Ireland when she competes in the closing leg of the women’s heptathlon. She will contend the long jump and javelin throw in the morning session before taking part in the 800m in the evening to conclude Day 14.

Ireland’s double-medallist Daniel Wiffen will compete in his final Olympic event of Paris 2024 when he plunges into the river Seine for the 10km marathon swim.

Water quality in the Seine has proved a headache for organisers of these Games, however Thursday’s women’s event passed without any apparent incident in what would certainly have been a relief for officials.

When he dives off the pontoon by the Alexandre III bridge at 6.30am Irish time, Wiffen will become the first Irishman to compete in an open-water swim at the Olympic Games.

Elsewhere, Leona Maguire and Stephanie Meadow will return to Le Golf National for the third day of the women’s Olympic golf tournament.

And Lara Gillespie and Alice Sharpe will be back in action at the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines Velodrome for the women’s madison.
