‘High pressure dominant’ – Met Éireann in glorious Ireland summer weather u-turn

Must read

Met Éireann’s latest weather forecast suggests summer could return to Ireland this week after an abysmal run of weather, including rain, wind and thunderstorms over the weekend.

Ireland has endured weeks of poor weather since a sunny spell in May but it finally looks like high pressure could become dominant later this week, but not before another sweep of low pressure weather feeds across Ireland.

Met Éireann’s national outlook predicts “low pressure dominating at first bringing further rain and showers. Becoming drier and more settled later in the week.”

In its forecast for the early part of the week, Met Éireann says there will be “mostly dry at first today [Monday] with sunny spells, however, scattered showers will break out from late morning, mainly over the northern half of the country with a few heavy ones possible in the north and west.

“During the afternoon and evening, cloud will build in Munster and south Leinster with outbreaks of rain and drizzle following. Highest temperatures of 16 to 20 degrees in light easterly breezes, becoming more moderate near coasts,” the forecast adds.

“Outbreaks of rain and drizzle” are predicted in Munster and south Leinster at first on Monday night, “gradually extending over much of Leinster through the night, and east Ulster by morning. Largely dry in the west and northwest with clear spells. Temperatures generally not falling below 9 to 14 degrees, though slightly cooler in the north, in light to moderate northeasterly winds.

“Mostly cloudy tomorrow morning [Tuesday] with outbreaks of rain and drizzle, most persistent in the southeast, east and northeast through the day with the possibility of spot flooding. Driest in the southwest and west, especially later in the day with sunny spells developing. Highest temperatures of 15 to 20 degrees, warmest in the southwest, in mostly moderate, occasionally fresh, northeasterly winds.

“Outbreaks of rain mainly over Ulster and Leinster at first [Tuesday night], becoming mostly confined to Ulster through the night as mostly dry conditions with clear spells in the south and west extend over much of the country. Temperatures not falling below 10 to 13 degrees with mostly light or moderate northerly winds.”

It looks like Wednesday will bring further “outbreaks of rain and drizzle over Ulster through much of the day. A mix of cloud, sunny spells and well scattered showers elsewhere, with the best of the sunshine in the Munster and Connacht. Highest temperatures ranging from 14 degrees in the north to 20 degrees in the south with moderate, occasionally fresh, northwesterly winds, strong at times near northwest coasts.

“Cloudy conditions in the north along with outbreaks of rain and drizzle will sink southwards during the night. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 13 degrees in light to moderate north or northwest winds.

“Mostly cloudy at first [on Thursday] with outbreaks of rain and drizzle, mainly over the northern half of the country, gradually tracking southwards, becoming patchier as it does so. Good spells of sunshine will develop in the north during the morning, following behind the rain, reaching all but southern areas by the end of the day. Highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees with light to moderate northerly winds, fresher along northern and exposed Atlantic coasts.

“Mostly dry with a mix of cloud and sunny spells with just a few light showers about [on Friday]. Highest temperatures of 15 to 20 degrees in mostly light northerly breezes.”

Beyond that, the Met Éireann outlook says: “Current indications suggest that high pressure will continue to dominate next weekend bringing a mix of cloud and sunny spells with light winds and just a few showers.”
