Ireland v Sri Lanka: Gaby Lewis relishing ODI series at Stormont

Must read

Ireland opener Gaby Lewis says the mood in the squad is “brilliant” before their ODI series against Sri Lanka at Stormont.

Lewis scored a brilliant 119 in Dublin on Tuesday to help the Irish to a seven-run victory over the Asia Cup champions to draw the T20 series 1-1.

It was a first win for Ireland women over Sri Lanka, while Lewis chalked up her first T20 century against an International Cricket Council full member team.

The sides now move north to Belfast, with the first of three matches taking place on Friday.

“After the win on Tuesday we’re all absolutely buzzing – after a loss in the first match and then bouncing back the mood is great, it’s brilliant,” said Lewis.

“They have a lot of spinners but we’ve had a really good prep coming into this series. We have plans, we’re ready to go and I back us as a team.”

Lewis is promoted to captain for the series in the absence of Laura Delany, who sustained an ankle injury while fielding in Tuesday’s match.

Injury also rules out Una Raymond-Hoey and she is replaced in the squad by Sarah Forbes.

Lewis hit 17 fours and two sixes in a wonderful knock on Tuesday and is relishing a return to the crease for the ODIs.

“In the last year or two I’ve preferred the longer format – you don’t have to be as attacking, I can trust my natural instincts a bit more as opposed to being premeditated and perhaps thinking ahead of the bowler,” she added.

“For this series I’m quite excited to spend as much time at the crease as I can and let my natural instincts take over.”
