A HOUSE was damaged in west Cork after a lightning strike during a severe thunderstorm late on Sunday evening.

The house was directly struck by lightning during a storm which was most intense over west Cork and parts of Limerick.

Cork Co Council Fire Brigade received reports from several locals that a property in Rossmore, between Clonakilty and Ballineen, had been struck by lightning shortly before 9pm.

The lightning bolt started a fire and brigades raced to the scene to deal with the blaze.

No one was seriously injured in the incident but locals were very shocked by what happened.

Five fire brigade units attended the scene to bring the blaze under control including units from Bandon Clonakilty and Dunmanway.

It is understood that significant damage was caused to the property both by the initial lightning strike and the subsequent fire.

A number of other lightning strikes were reported across Munster and Connacht with some homes left without power in west Cork when an electrical transformer was hit.
