Perhaps lost in the lengthy list of achievements boasted by the Play in Pink campaign is the element of education around breast cancer that follows the movement everywhere it goes.
Play in Pink continues to grow year-on-year with the ever-popular charity raising more than €550,000 in 2023 to aid the work of the breast cancer research programme at the Lambe Institute, Galway.
It’s a colourful community that has captured the hearts of the Irish golfing public and beyond but far from your average charity, Play in Pink is so much more, creating a space for people to come together and share their stories, and often their burdens.
One in seven Irish women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year but while the disease remains prevalent, patient outcomes are constantly improving thanks to the discoveries of research programmes like the Lambe Institute, Galway.
Through its golf days, Play in Pink relays this message of hope for players perhaps dealing with the disease, or family members affected by it, with many survivors teeing up each year to prove that breast cancer is not only treatable, but beatable.
At the heart of these charity days is education. It’s a coming together that highlights how many women have been affected, but also the signs to watch out for in order to catch cancer as early as possible. It’s a reminder of the importance to go and get checked, to not let a concern fester, and to embrace a community spirit that provides hard evidence that no-one is alone in this struggle.
2024 has already been a massive year for Play in Pink with plenty more exciting dates on the calendar, not least the much-loved Dress in Pink Day which returns to the Friday of this year’s KPMG Women’s Irish Open at Carton House.
Friday August 30th will see players, caddies and spectators put on a vibrant display of pink in aid of the National Breast Cancer Research Institute with merchandise, donation stations and so much more available on the day to ensure another successful year of fundraising for the Play in Pink campaign.
More than 200 golf clubs have signed up for a Play in Pink Day in Ireland in 2024 which means many more still have the opportunity to join this ever-growing movement. By teeing up, you’ll be directly supporting life-saving research that’s already been proven to work. You’ll even enjoy a discounted price on your Women’s Irish Open admission ticket where Leona Maguire will spearhead the home contingent. So what are you waiting for?
