The EU wants the tech giant to pay Ireland €13bn in tax. Apple says it has paid its taxes, and Ireland agrees

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has issued a final decision on the long running Apple tax case this morning. The case has been running in various guises since August 2016 and even this ruling is unlikely to be the final word. The ECJ backed the European Commission, ordering Ireland to collect €13bn from Apple.
The European Commission, one of the most powerful EU institutions, concluded a three-year probe back in 2016 when it ruled that Ireland had given Apple a “sweetheart” tax deal lasting decades. Apple was ordered to pay €13bn in back taxes plus interest.
