McIlroy favourite to bounce back at Wentworth – Irish Golfer Magazine

Must read

Rory McIlroy is the 5/1 favourite with BoyleSports to bounce back from his Irish Open disappointment with a victory at this week’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

There was more heartache for the four-time major winner when an eagle putt to force a playoff on the 72nd narrowly missed the hole, allowing Dane Rasmus Hojgaard to claim victory by one stroke following a final round of 65 at Royal County Down.

While McIlroy was ultimately denied a fairytale win in front of a home crowd, backers of the Holywood native in BoyleSports’ Early Payout market were celebrating early as his third round lead was enough to see him settled as the tournament winner. He can be backed this week at 9/2 knowing a payout is guaranteed if he is the sole leader after 54 holes, but a competitive field descends on Wentworth for the DP World Tour’s flagship event and the chasing pack is headed by England’s Tommy Fleetwood (9/1 second favourite).

Ireland’s Shane Lowry has fond memories of the Wentworth track having won the event in 2022 and the Offaly man is a popular 12/1 shot to bag his first solo victory of the year having already landed the Zurich Classic of New Orleans alongside playing partner Rory McIlroy.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said: “It’s been a tale of near misses for Rory McIlroy of late but like Shane Lowry he’s won round Wentworth before, so punters are confident an Irish win is just around the corner.”
