Footage has surfaced of Derry-born footballer James McClean catching a beer thrown at him with one hand after Wrexham’s disappointing 3-1 defeat to Birmingham City.

The footballer was on the receiving end of abuse from home fans after he was substituted during the game.

McClean was seen gesturing towards fans before he was booed and the pint was thrown his way.

The winger caught it and pretended to drink from the cup before throwing it away.

He also lifted his left short leg to show a tattoo while walking off the pitch, slapping his thigh to draw attention to the design which represents Free Derry Corner in the city of his birth.

It was a moment of Hollywood-esque drama of which Hollywood A-lister Ryan Reynolds would have been proud. Wrexham is owned by Reynolds along with Rob McElhenney, with the latter also attending Monday’s league clash in person

Ex-NFL star Tom Brady, who has a minority stake in Birmingham, was also in the crowd to watch the match and was similarly taunted himself by Wrexham fans.

Tensions came to a head for McLean and fellow Irish footballer Eoghan O’Connell after they were involved in an altercation with rival players.

Tempers boiled over during the League 1 clash after a coming together between Alex Cochrane and Paul Mullin sparked a large brawl in which McClean was front and centre.

He was immediately taken off, which received a loud response from the Birmingham faithful.
