Gorey and Arklow join forces to stage open tennis championships

Must read

For the second year running, both clubs provided their facilities to run a total of 157 matches during a one-week period.

A total of 161 players competed with some participating in multiple categories and classes. The dull weather almost threw a spanner in the works at times, but all matches managed to be completed without any break of play.

This year Bostik Ireland came on board as a sponsor for the event and this allowed the inclusion of championship class categories for the first time.

Some of the best players in Ireland came to compete and club members were treated to a great display of high-quality tennis.

The championship categories were completed over the first weekend, leaving all remaining classes to battle it out over the course of each weekday evening, with the final matches held the following Saturday.

Both clubs would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated, volunteered and came to support the event. A huge thank you goes to Bostik whose generous support made this year’s open possible. Thanks also to Lidl Gorey for supplying fruit for all those competing.

The winner of the men’s singles event was Mark Griffin who defeated Jonas Watkins to secure the top prize and receive the Kris Rydzewski Cup.

Claudia Nencini beat Ruth Kennedy to take the ladies’ singles prize and the Stephanie O’Toole Cup.
