McSweeney Steps Up as CFO at Basketball Ireland – Sport for Business

Alecia McSweeney has been appointed as Basketball Ireland’s new Chief Financial Officer (CFO), succeeding Donal Walsh who will stay on in an Financial Advisor capacity to assist in the transition.

McSweeney has achieved FCCA status, qualifying almost 20 years ago. She has been with Basketball Ireland since 2005 and prior to her elevation as CFO, she operated as the organisation’s Senior Financial Officer, giving her an extensive knowledge of the sports industry.

She has a broad range of experience, having spent a number of years working in practice and has also operated at CFO level in a medium-sized construction company.

“I’m delighted to take up the role as Basketball Ireland’s CFO at a very exciting time for the organisation, as we continue to make important strides on and off the court,” she said.

“Personally, I’d like to thank Donal for all the guidance I’ve received since he joined Basketball Ireland. I’m delighted he has agreed to stay on in an advisory capacity as I take on the increased responsibility in this new role. I look forward to continue working with him, Michelle Dermody and Michelle Heffernan in the finance team into the future.”

“Firstly, I’d like to commend our outgoing CFO Donal Walsh for the incredible work he has done after assuming the position in 2011,” said Basketball Ireland CEO John Feehan.

“He has been an integral part of the development of the organisation during that time and an important part of the executive since I joined in 2021.”

“I wish him every success going forward. It’s fantastic to see Alecia (McSweeney) taking up the position of CFO. Her tenure in Basketball Ireland brings with it valuable experience and insights to the role, ensuring stability and continuity at this important time for the sport. ”

Harry Doyle is also embarking on a new role as Basketball Ireland’s Development Officer in South Dublin. He previously joined Basketball Ireland as an Aspire Graduate in 2023, subsequently working as a Development Officer in the Midlands since joining the organisation in 2023.
