From Daniel O’Donnell to the rocky Burren, a new series will explore various aspects of Irish life celebrated on our stamps.
Scéalta ár Stampaí will feature figures from all areas of society from music to politics who will explore the places, faces and culture represented on Irish stamps.
The series will delve into why these images were chosen and the stories behind them.
The first episode, presented by Eoin Ó Catháin, who is a lobbyist and former political correspondent, will explore how we’ve celebrated politics in Ireland on our stamps.
Mr Ó’Catháin will meet former Minister Mary Hanafin, An Post Curator and Archivist Stephen Ferguson, Historian Kerron Ó Luain and Writer and Activist Lisa Nic an Bhreithimh.
Other episodes will include musician Megan Nic Ruairí as she examines Irish music and musicians found on Irish stamps. Ms Nic Ruairí will meet fellow musicians Colm Mac Con Iomaire, Fiachna Ó Braonáin, artist Jim Fitzpatrick along with broadcaster Jo Ní Chéide.
Gaelic Football referee and Primary School Principal David Gough will journey through our sporting stamps.
Mr David will meet Jerry Grogan, Dr Cathal Billings, Olympian Michelle Finn and Cuan Ó Seireadáin to learn more about the representation of Irish sport and our sporting icons on our stamps.
Wildflower expert Aedín Ní Thiarnaigh will look at the stamps that have depicted plants throughout Irish history.
Ms Ní Thiarnaigh will meet fern expert Emer Ní Dhúill and botanical artist Susan Sex and Hometree’s Sarah Broderick. She will also explore the landscape of the Burren with Tony Kirby, Pius Murray and Declan Kelleher.
Actor, poet and writer Roxanna Nic Liam will explore the stories of Irish drama on our stamps.
She will meet TD Maureen O’Sullivan, University of Galway’s Marianne Ní Chinnéide, Artist Martin De Porres Wright and award winning actress Bríd Ní Neachtain.
The series will start on Thursday, October 10 at 8pm on TG4 and will run for six weeks.
