Is the answer to Ireland’s data center energy problem nuclear power? Why are Google and Microsoft investing in it? And why are 15 data centres across the country paused?
Adrian was joined by Senior Lecturer in Clean Energy at University College Cork, Dr. Paul Deane, to discuss the issue.
The UCC lecturer began by talking about the environmental downsides of data centres but first admitted that modern society needs data centres and that economies tend to revolve around them.
He pointed out that the interview, which was done via studio and phone, was made possible by information that was transmitted through a data centre. This meant, according to the clean energy expert, that Dr Deane didn’t have to use his car to travel to the studio which meant that his carbon footprint was less than it would have been if there were no data centres.
