Ireland AM stars open up on Trump’s victory

Must read

Political journalist Sean Defoe has slammed Kamala Harris’ election campaign as ‘quite poor,’ as he outlined his main worries of Donald Trump becoming the 47th President of the United States of America.

Mr Trump declared he won a ‘magnificent victory for the American people’ as he nears confirmation of resuming office in the White House. The Republican has 266 electoral votes, and needs 270 to be confirmed for The White House.

Mr Trump told his supporters that ‘America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate’, after he was projected to win a number of crucial swing states ahead of Democrat candidate Kamala Harris.

The race initially appeared neck-and-neck as Americans went to the polls, but Mr Trump pulled ahead as result predictions came in from solidly red states including Florida, Texas and Alabama throughout the night.

The 78-year-old was also granted electoral votes from North Carolina, Georgia, Wisconsin and most recently Pennsylvania — with the latter going to Trump meaning Harris has no path to 270 votes.

Virgin Media news correspondent Richard Chambers confirmed that the it was ‘all over bar the shouting’ on Wednesday morning, adding that there was ‘no point in ruminating’ over what key races were left to play.

Dialing in from the US to Ireland AM, Richard said: ‘The rest of the world needs to get used to the idea that Donald Trump is going to be the 47th President of the United States.’

Newstalk’s political correspondent Sean Defoe had a similar sentiment earlier on the show confirming: ‘It’s over.’

‘More people felt worse off in this election cycle than they have in more than 20 years,’ Sean explained to presenters Muireann O’Connell and Ray Foley.

‘More people felt worse off than they did in 2008 — the biggest recession in probably our lifetimes.’

Reflecting on the candidates election campaigns, Sean branded Kamala Harris’ as ‘ultimately, quite poor.’

‘I think she was a really weak candidate,’ he stated, noting she did not take ‘risks,’ and leaned on the fact that she was not Donald Trump.

‘The whole thing was, “I’m not Trump,” and that didn’t appeal to enough people,’ Sean stated.

Leadership Communications Expert, Gina London disagreed with the political journalist, noting that Harris was put in a ‘very difficult situation’ as she took over the campaign from Joe Biden.

‘She ran a damn good campaign,’ Gina argued, ‘She had things stacked against her.’

Elsewhere, Sean admitted he was doubtful that Trump would be ‘more stable’ during his second term in office.

‘I’m slightly more worried about this version of Trump,’ the journalist said, ‘I don’t think he’s that much interest in governing; he has an interest in settling scores and doing well for himself, having a legacy and all that kind of stuff.’

Sean added that the incoming President also didn’t have ‘a stable team around him.’

‘He had a team of so-called normal and moderate Republicans who kept him in check, had the guard rails up [last time],’ Sean said, ‘This time he has no such thing.

‘It’s all MAGA, Trump loyalists [and] people who will do whatever he says.’
