Jobs boost for Meath as premier four star hotel plans to add 90 bedrooms to 18th century estate

Large-scale plans for an extensive expansion of Meath’s Johnstown Estate Hotel have been lodged with local authority planning officials.

The owners of the Johnstown Estate in Enfield, Co Meath say the plans will enhance the all-round appeal of one of Ireland’s leading hospitality destinations while also creating a number of jobs as a result.

The owners of a luxurious four star Meath hotel are planning to carry out a major extension to its sprawling 120 acre estate in a move that is expected to create dozens of jobs in the process.

The Johnstown Estate Hotel is one of the country’s premier leisure and hospitality destinations, boasting 128 bedrooms and suites overlooking the River Blackwater in Enfield.

Now, its Dublin based owners Lefgem Limited have tabled plans which, subject to planning, will add even more exclusivity and opulence to its historic 18th century estate.

Large-scale plans for an extensive expansion of Meath’s Johnstown Estate Hotel have been lodged with local authority planning officials.

At the head of those plans includes designs to undertake a three storey extension to its existing hotel, consisting of 90 bedrooms.

Its envisaged that once built, a new single storey connection will join up with the hotel’s main building while medications to the existing floor plan of its tenor suite will allow for a new, deluxe restaurant.

A series of other upgrade works have also been drawn up, including a new entrance to the hotel’s state of the art leisure centre.

The hotel, which attracts thousands of visitors to the southern end of the Boyne Valley on an annual basis, has been the recipient of numerous accolades over the years.

Two years ago, it ranked 4th in the Irish Independent Reader Travel Awards for Ireland’s best spas in 2022 and was awarded ‘Most Rejuvenating Parkland Retreat’ the following year by premium lifestyle publication, LuxLife Magazine.

In a planning statement, consultants for Lefgem said the hotel’s proposed expansion would not only add an extra dimension to its existing facility but also provide a major boost to the local economy.

“The key objective of the proposed development is to enhance the existing Johnstown Estate premises and its current service offering, providing for a reinvigorated interactive customer experience for incoming patrons,” the statement outlined.

“Fundamentally, the proposed development would provide an enhanced experience for future customers and would aid in the creation of additional local jobs.”

A final decision on the plans is expected to be made on or before February 2, 2025.
