The mother of Olympic medallist Mona McSharry has described how her proud family wrapped her “in a big old family squeeze hug” when she claimed bronze in the 100m breaststroke in Paris last night.

Speaking the morning after she watched her daughter become Ireland’s 39th Olympic medallist, Viola McSharry said it was a “really special moment”.
