Strong performances in all five of her appearances this season have handed Anna Abom (Edmondstown) a narrow lead at the top of the Bridgestone Women’s Order of Merit.
A fine start to 2024 has seen Abom finish inside the top ten of all the tournaments she has played thus far this season, with a third place finish at the Ulster Women’s Amateur Stroke Play, runner up performances in the Cork and Woodbrook Scratch Cups, and victory in the Royal County Down Scratch Cup helping the Edmondstown golfer take a six-point lead over Aideen Walsh (Lahinch) at the top of the leaderboard.
Annabel Wilson (Castlerock) has taken big strides in chasing down Abom at the top of the tree by following up her impressive victory in Clandeboye at the Ulster Women’s Amateur Stroke Play with another win at the Ulster Over 18 Women’s Senior Championship, moving her to within 180 points of top spot.
Matthew McClean’s sixth place finish in the Kingspan East of Ireland Men’s Amateur Open Championship was enough to see the Malone golfer maintain his position at the top of the men’s standings, as the Flogas Irish Men’s Amateur Open Champion holds a healthy 273-point lead over TJ Ford (County Sligo Golf Club) in second place.
Newly crowned East of Ireland Champion Caolan Rafferty (Dundalk) has taken a big jump up the table. His win in Baltray earned the Louth man the full compliment of 250 points and moved him from T17 to solo sixth.
The next opportunity for the men to gain ranking points comes this week as the Connacht Men’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship gets underway in Portumna on Saturday June 8th.
The Flogas Irish Women’s Amateur Open Championship is next up on the women’s schedule, as one of the biggest days on the calendar sees the players tee it up in Woodbrook, starting the following Saturday, June 15th.
