Fianna Fáil announced Ms Comyn, who is a reporter for the Drogheda Independent, which is owned by Irish Independent publisher Mediahuis Ireland, will run alongside Senator Erin McGreehan in the Louth constituency.

Ms Comyn’s addition to the ticket follows Fianna Fáil’s success in running former RTÉ presenter Cynthia Ní Mhurchú in the European elections, and broadcaster Gráinne Seoige putting her name forward to run for the party in Galway West.

In a statement, Fianna Fáil said Ms Comyn is “deeply-rooted in her community of Drogheda and South Louth”.

“She has over 30 years’ experience in media, as a television and print journalist, broadcaster, and news anchor, presenting numerous current affairs and entertainment programmes,” the party said.

“Alison has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to public service and community throughout her career and will make an excellent addition to the Louth Fianna Fáil ticket.”

Ms Comyn has worked for a number of broadcasters, including Sky News and the BBC, and was a news anchor with UTV Ireland, which ran from 2015 to 2017.

Ms Comyn said she was born, raised and educated in Drogheda and as a local journalist for almost 20 years knows the issues that affect her community.

“I know the stories, struggles and successes that have shaped our community because I live in the region and experience them myself, meaning I’m not just a candidate, but a neighbour who is invested in the future of our region,” she said.

“The Drogheda area has faced serious challenges in recent years – and we’re not out of the woods yet – but I honestly believe it can be a thriving, vibrant community where everyone can flourish.

“I would like to thank Fianna Fáil for this opportunity to contest the next election, and I look forward to bringing a positive new dawn for Drogheda and Co Louth.”

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin said Ms Comyn is a “very accomplished candidate” and an “excellent addition” to the Fianna Fáil ticket.

“In Erin and Alison we have a strong Fianna Fáil team in Louth that will work together in running a positive and energetic campaign in their communities,” he said.

A Mediahuis Ireland spokesperson said: “We are in discussions with our employee about putting in place arrangements to make sure there is no conflict of interest in this situation.”
