Classy Costello marches clear in Belvoir Park – Irish Golfer Magazine

Must read

Reigning champion Olivia Costello holds a two-shot lead after the opening round of the Flogas Irish Girls’ Amateur Open Championship at Belvoir Park.

The 16-year-old Roscommon golfer shot a sensational 66 on Friday morning for a -7 total, ahead of Marie Agnes Fischer (Munchener Golf Club) and Anna Abom (Edmondstown).

The fact that only nine players managed to finish with under par rounds on the day made it even more impressive, as Costello bids to go back-to-back following her win at Woodbrook last year.

Costello began with a couple of birdies on her front nine but she really opened up on the home stretch with another birdie on the tenth before an eagle on 12 and further birdies on 15 and 17.

One of 12 German representatives in the field, Fischer shot 68 which included seven birdies while recent Royal County Down Scratch Cup winner Abom also had seven birdies on her card.

Fellow Ireland star Kate Dillon (Oughterard) is also under par, she finished on -3 after a first round 70 with Hannah Guerin (Royal Tara) the only other Irish golfer to finish in the red, after a 72.
