A field of 16 runners and riders will take their chance in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on Sunday.
There are three Irish-trained horses in the mix for Europe’s most prestigious race after Aidan O’Brien withdrew Auguste Rodin and Luxembourg at the final declaration stage.
The Ballydoyle master relies on Irish Derby and Great Voltigeur winner Los Angeles, who was last seen finishing fourth in the Irish Champion Stakes, and last season’s fifth Continuous.
Joseph O’Brien saddles Al Riffa following the four-year-old’s roaring success in the Grosser Preis von Berlin, although veteran Japanese jockey Yutaka Take replaces Dylan Browne McMonagle in the plate after Masaaki Matsushima bought into the horse.
Prix Vermeille heroine Bluestocking is the standout of the two British-trained hopefuls after Juddmonte dipped into their deep pockets to pay the €120,000 supplementary fee for the filly and her trainer Ralph Beckett will be hoping she can go one better than former stablemate Westover’s second place last term.
Sunway – trained by Frenchman David Menuisier in West Sussex – is the other British runner, but the promoted St Leger third is still trying for a first win of the campaign.
Look De Vega is bidding to emulate last year’s winner Ace Impact by completing the Prix du Jockey Club-Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe double, while Prix Niel hero Sosie is France’s other leading candidate.
Meanwhile, Shin Emperor is the latest horse attempting to give Japan their first winner in the race and warmed up for the task with an impressive third place in the Irish Champion Stakes last time out.
