Millstreet Community School students are designing innovative projects utilising advanced manufacturing technologies thanks to the support of the town’s largest Employer Alps Electric.
The partnership allows engineering students participate in the Irish Manufacturing Research (IMR) promotion of a Transition Year Work Experience Programme to provide students with hands-on experiences with cutting-edge technologies currently shaping the way products are manufactured such as 3D printing, collaborative robots and augmented and virtual reality.
Alps Electric (Ireland) Limited engaged with the IMR and Millstreet Community School to introduce this programme through sponsoring the provision of a 3D printer. Students are currently hands-on working with the equipment and making many different products.
“This is a wonderful experience for the student and hopefully it will promote Engineering as a career choice for students”, said John Foley, Managing Director, Alps.
Millstreet Community School Engineering Teacher Brian Kelleher applauded the concept and participation the 3D Printing Challenge empowers students creatively and practically.
“We have adapted and tailored the Ideas Made Real Module and further advanced the opportunities available to students. Our school is lucky to have been sponsored by ALPS Alpine, they have been very supportive of this initiative and their support has led to the acquisition of advanced educational resources such as computer programming kits and equipment as well as a top of the range 3d Printer”, said Mr. Kelleher.
“Millstreet Community School is extremely grateful for this support and the opportunity to work with a Global Tech Company such as ALPS. Through ALPS support, the school received a top of the range 3D Printer and advanced coding and electronic equipment to support our students learning”, he said.
ALPS Electric (Ireland) Ltd. was founded in Millstreet in 1988, delivering High Quality Electronic products to exacting delivery requirements. Additionally, Alps has developed products locally for IoT technology devices and services.
Mr. Foley along with Noreen Dineen, Human Resources, Health & Safety Manager Alps interacted with students and viewed their progress evolving in technology education as a direct result of the company’s much appreciated investment.
