THE Drogheda South U11 mixed basketball team has a big date coming up on Saturday May 25 when they take part in the Community Games All-Ireland weekend just down the road at Gormanston College.

It follows their success in winning the provincial decider in Longford the week before last.

The Drogheda South team was selected at trials in February and March and they started training as a group in late March.

Four members of the squad are pupils of St Mary’s Parish Primary School in Bryanstown, and all are players with Drogheda Wolves, and they qualified to represent Louth in the Leinster rounds of the Community Games competition

Their first game saw them make the journey to Longford to play Drumlish/Ballinamuck who had qualified to represent the midland county and Drogheda South came away with a 19-12 win.

Next up for the Drogheda South team was a local game against a strong Dunshaughlin team who were representing Meath, and this time the Drogheda team came away with a big victory in front of a large crowd in Ballymakenny College made up of parents and Wolves club members.

Back they went to Longford the week before last to take part in the Leinster finals weekend in St Mels College.

The first game of the day saw Drogheda South take on Malahide/Dublin in the provincial semi-final. Once more Drogheda South won – 31-15 – and the subsequent final against a very strong Portlaoise team made up of Portlaoise Panthers players resulted in a 26-16 for the Drogheda team.

Meanwhile, last weekend Drogheda Wolves held their end-of-season tournament for club players in Ballymakenny College.
