Kane hails ‘top drawer’ Carsley
Harry Kane has scored 28 goals in 36 appearances for England at Wembley, extending his record as top scorer at the venue for the Three Lions.
The Republic of Ireland were the 32nd different opponent Kane has scored against for England; the most of any player.
The Bayern Munich striker has been giving his post-match thoughts to ITV at full-time as the Lee Carsley era officially comes to a close.
Kane to ITV Sport: “A really important win for us. It has been a really good camp and two tough games. We got the job done in Greece and again here. It was a tough first half but we came out with more energy and we finished it off.
On whether his pass for the penalty was one of his best: “I think so. I think it was probably one of the best. I expected Jude [Bellingham] to go and score but in the end, it probably worked out best with them getting the man sent off and obviously finishing the penalty.”
On England’s four new goal scorers: “Yeah, amazing. We spoke a lot in the week about opportunities for new lads, opportunities for lads who have been here and not quite got the minutes and they showed out there why they’re here. A couple of great finishes.
“It was nice for Jarrod [Bowen] too to come on and score straight away so that worked pretty well as well.”
“We’ve had a lot of ups, one big down. It’s been a fantastic year, and there’s another one next year to qualify for the World Cup.”
On Tuchel: “Thomas [Tuchel] has a lot of players to choose from. A lot of young players who have come in and done well and some more experienced players who are injured and will be looking to come back and fight for their place as well. So there’s a good balance. I’m sure he [Tuchel] will be looking at everyone, and come March, hopefully, the lads will be ready.”
On Carsley’s impact as interim boss: “He has been top drawer, him and all the staff. It’s never easy after a European Championship to come and go again, especially when you come and play the Nations League – sometimes the motivation is a little bit less.
“But I think the boys showed and they showed a great energy, and they’ve bled through some of the younger lads as well.
“Some lads who maybe wouldn’t have got an opportunity if it wasn’t for him. I’m really glad that we won today and we can finish off happy.”
