First memorial golf tournament held for late Irish News photographer Hugh Russell

THE family of the late Irish News photographer and champion boxer, Hugh Russell, have staged a memorial golf tournament in his memory.

Taking place at the Fortwilliam Golf Club on Friday, the event raised money for MacMillan Cancer Support.

There was an outpouring of support after Hugh’s passing last October, having spent 40 years as an award-winning photographer with the Irish News.

He also enjoyed a highly-decorated boxing career with accolades including a bronze Commonwealth medal, bronze Olympic medal and becoming a two-weight British champion.

The organisers added that he always considered his family to be his biggest achievement; his wife Kathy and children Hugh Jnr, Hayley, Megan, James and Calum.

With over £2,500 raised by the effort so far, the Irish News sponsored a hole for the day while colleagues from IntoMedia (which owns the Irish News, Interpress and Q Radio) entered their own four-ball team.
