Sergio Garcia missed out on a place in next month’s US Open at Pinehurst in agonising fashion.
Garcia, a 2017 Masters winner, competed in US Open final qualifying in Dallas on Monday and he was involved in a playoff between seven players, battling for the six remaining spots.
The Spaniard was the odd one out and he will be absent from North Carolina.
Having reached five-under through 15 holes and well inside the cut mark, Garcia double bogeyed the par-5 16th to tumble down the leaderboard.
At three-under he entered the clubhouse back in the pack and by the time play had concluded he was one of seven players on the number with six spots remaining.
Garcia was the only player of the seven players to bogey the playoff hole, rendering him the first and only loser of the playoff.
The LIV golfer might still tee it up in the US Open as he has first alternate status.
Garcia is one of several LIV professionals who have had to play in major championship qualifiers in recent years having seen his world ranking fall dramatically.
Garcia’s fellow spaniard, Eugenio Chacarra finished T2 on Monday and earned his spot in the US Open.
