For the first time on the PGA in Ireland region there was an eight-way tie for top sport at the Burkeway Galway Golf Club Pro-Am.
Richie O’Donovan, Tim Rice, Colm Moriarty, Brian McElhinney, Damian Mooney, Michael McDermott, Brian McCormack and Michael McGeady all claimed a share of the spoils on two-over-par in very difficult conditions.
O’Donovan retuned to form to get his first win of the campaign with a 72 that included three birdies and five bogeys.
Limerick’s Rice started on the back nine and was level-par through ten holes before a double bogey on the 3rd and bogey on 6 dropped him out of top spot but he recovered with a birdie at the par-5 7th.
PGA Cup bound Moriarty opened his round with a double bogey on the 10th but responded with a birdie on the par-3 11th.
The Glasson man had a rollercoaster back nine picking up birdies on the 1st, 7th and 8th as well as bogeys on the 3rd and 9th and a second double of the day on 5.
Tullamore’s McCormack also had an eventful round of golf, starting on the back nine he quickly moved to two-under with birdies on 13 and 14 but turned level par after a double bogey, birdie, bogey finish to his nine.
McCormack carded just three pars on the back nine but crucially picked up a couple of birdies to cling on to a share of the spoils.
