There was widespread shock and sadness in Edenderry, Co Offaly, on Saturday after news filtered through that a man had died in the local Lidl supermarket.
There was a huge response from the emergency services with multiple units of the local fire brigade, ambulance services and gardaí on the scene at the store on the Dublin Road in the town.
The man sadly died at the scene in the store. The store was then closed for the afternoon as emergency services dealt with the situation.
Lidl Ireland issued a statement to Offaly Express confirming the sad news.
“Our Edenderry store was closed for a number of hours on Saturday 21st September due to a customer experiencing a medical episode whilst shopping in the store.
“Our store team immediately responded to the incident and contacted emergency services and the Gardaí to assist but, sadly, the customer passed away. Our thoughts are with their family and loved ones.”
Gardaí also confirmed that they responded to the medical emergency. The man has not yet been named locally.
