Ireland reveal crucial player’s extension after 24-hour teaser and exit talks

Ireland and Leinster tighthead prop Tadhg Furlong has penned a new two-year extension with the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU), which will keep him on the Emerald Isle until the end of the 2026/27 season.

Furlong made his Test debut against Wales in 2015, and has won a total of 78 caps since. He has also helped Ireland win three Six Nations titles, including two back-to-back championships under Andy Farrell.

“Dream come true” extension for Furlong

Commenting on his contract extension, Furlong said: “To get the chance to continue my playing career in Ireland with my home province is a dream come true. I am delighted to extend my long association with both Leinster Rugby and the IRFU for the seasons to come.”

He added: “Since the beginning of my career I have aimed to contribute positively in a winning environment and I believe that there are bright times to come for club and country.”

He has been hit by injuries this season and missed all four of Ireland’s Autumn Nations Series Tests, and has also only featured twice for Leinster in the United Rugby Championship.

Despite this, he is seen as a key cog in both Ireland and Leinster’s front-row and is arguably one of the best tighthead props in the world.

IRFU Performance Director, David Humphreys, commented: “Tadhg is a world-class tighthead whose influence transcends his abilities on the field. Since breaking into the Leinster and Ireland set-ups he has set a new standard as a prop and his hunger to improve and perform at a consistently high level sets him apart.”

He added: “Today’s announcement underpins the IRFU’s commitment to retaining top talent and in ensuring that the best Irish players will continue to play at home. I would like to wish Tadhg well in the years to come.”

Furlong made his provincial debut for Leinster in 2013 and has since helped them win four league titles and one Champions Cup. Despite his long relationship, though, there were emerging rumours Furlong was attracting interest from various Top 14 clubs, however this extension will keep him around until at least the World Cup in 2027.

The prop is also a favourite to go on the British and Irish Lions tour this year, with Farrell taking charge of the iconic touring team. Furlong has previously toured in both 2017 and 2021.
