Saturday evening sees England return to footballing action for the first time since their defeat to Spain in the final of Euro 2024 in Berlin back in July.

England’s second consecutive defeat in Euro finals spelled the end of Gareth Southgate’s tenure in charge of the Three Lions, after just shy of eight years in charge, in which time he’d lead his nation to two Euros finals, a World Cup semi final and a World Cup quarter final.

The managed handed the interim job as Southgate’s successor while the FA look to hire a permanent replacement is Lee Carsley, who has been promoted from managing the U21 side, with whom he lead to being crowned champions of Europe at the U21 Euros in 2023.

Carsley’s first match in charge will be against the nation he represented on 36 occasions, as England travel to Dublin to take on Ireland in the opening match of the new Nations League campaign.

England suffered a surprise relegation in the last edition of the Nations League finishing bottom of a group that contained Italy, Hungary and Germany, which leaves them now playing in League B.

After playing in Dublin, England will return back to Wembley for their next fixture on Tuesday when they host Finland.

Saturday evening will also mark the start of a new era for Ireland, as Icelandic manager Heimir Hallgrimsson takes charge of the side for the first time, having been in charge of Jamaica for the last two seasons.

The 57-year-old will have fond memories of managing against England, as he was the man in charge of the Iceland side who so famously knocked Roy Hodgson’s Three Lions out of Euro 2016 at the second round stage in Nice.

Hallgrimsson takes over a team previously managed by Stephen Kenny, who led for an unsuccessful three and a half years, failing to qualify for a major tournament, losing six of Ireland’s eight qualifiers for Euro 2024, only managing to pick up points against a Gibraltar side full of part-timers.

The 47-year-old will start his time as manager with back-to-back home games, firstly on Saturday against England, during which a hostile and vociferous atmosphere can be expected, which will be followed by Greece’s visit to Dublin on Tuesday night.

Saturday’s match will be the first meeting between the two nations since a friendly at Wembley in November 2021, when goals from Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho and Dominic Calvert-Lewin secured a 3-0 win for Gareth Southgate’s side behind closed doors.

Five of the last six completed matches between the two nations have ended in a draw, including the most recent meeting in Dublin in June 2015, while England’s victory at Wembley three years ago is their only win over Ireland in six attempts, going 39 years back to 1985.
