South Africa kickoff the series against Ireland with the first T20I game on Friday (Sep 27). The tour is being held in Abu Dhabi, a call which the Cricket Ireland board’s chief executive Warren Deutrom described as a “creative” way to overcome infrastructure constraints. The tour comprises two T20Is and will conclude with a three-match ODI series.
The tour holds a lot of significance for both the sides. While Aiden Markram-led white-ball side wants to make smooth progress for the future, with one eye on next year’s Champions Trophy — in Asian conditions, Ireland will aim to shrug past their disappointing and winless run in the 2024 T20 World Cup with a good turnaround.
Markram-led SA start the T20Is with a highly-inexperienced side at their arsenal. Only three out of the playing XI who played in T20 WC final, versus India, in Barbados, are part of the 15-man squad. Thus, it will be interesting to see how the young guns perform. The ODIs will also have their own challenges. South Africa are entering this tour on the back of a 2-1 ODI series loss to Afghanistan, in Sharjah, recently.
At present, both sides will look to take an unassailable lead in the two T20Is with a win in the series opener.
