Los Angeles won the Irish Derby at the Curragh to give trainer Aidan O’Brien a record-extending 16th triumph in the race.

Ridden by jockey Ryan Moore, Los Angeles finished three-quarters of a length clear of Sunway in second place and a further half-length in front of the 6-4 favourite Ambiente Friendly.

The victory came after a thrilling finale to the flagship race at the Curragh.

Los Angeles, at odds of 13-8, shook off the challenge of Ambiente Friendly in the home straight with fellow British-trained challenger Sunway staying on for second.

The victor had been third behind stablemate City Of Troy for Irish trainer O’Brien in the Derby at Epsom, when Ambiente Friendly was runner-up.

“We think he’ll get better. He’s a big, hardy horse,” said O ‘Brien of Los Angeles.
