DROGHEDA UNITED have distanced themselves from Conor McGregor after he was pictured with the FAI Cup.
The disgraced UFC fighter posed with the trophy and congratulated cousin Warren Davis – a member of the Drogheda squad – on his success.
But he mistakenly claimed Davis played for arch rivals Dundalk and said the forward was his second cousin to have claimed the honour after Bohemians skipper Keith Buckley.
Buckley was part of the Bohs team beaten by St Pat’s on penalties in the 2021 decider and missed the 2023 final against the same opposition – which the Gypsies also lost – through injury.
McGregor posted: “Yup the gaf, @theblackforgeinn! FAI cup in the house!
“Congrats my cuz @warrend02 on winning the fai trophy with @dundalkfc!
“That’s two of my cousins now who have won this prestigious Irish Football League trophy.
“One with Bohs, Keith, and one with Dundalk, Warren!! Tremendous! It’s in the blood!”
He corrected the first mistake but not the second but the post caused controversy given.
Last November, he was found liable for the sexual assault of Nikita Hand in a High Court civil case.
And it prompted the Boyensiders to issue this statement.
It said: “A social media post has been brought to our attention today regarding the FAI Cup.
“Those pictured are a close relation to one of our first team players, who like all the other players had custody of the cup to celebrate with their families at different intervals.
“Drogheda United do not associate ourselves with the individual who made the social media post in any way, or with any unauthorised brands mentioned.”
McGregor also went on to add in a post on X that he might consider buying a League of Ireland club, or two.
He penned: “How much is it to buy a league of Ireland team I might buy two.”
