It is the result of a long process that was started by Hallgrimsson’s predecessor Stephen Kenny before his exit last year.

On Twitter, McAteer retweeted the squad list it the caption “An Honour” alongside a green heart and Ireland flag.

Heimir Hallgrimsson kicks off his tenure in charge of Ireland with the home ties against England and Greece in the UEFA Nations League.

The Three Lions come to Dublin on September 7 before the visit of Greece to the Aviva Stadium on September 10.

McAteer is the only new face in Hallgrímsson’s first squad, that he selected along with assistant John O’Shea – who was in interim charge for the last four games.

Leicester’s Tom Cannon – who is a teammate of McAteer at Leicester – is left out following his debut against Portugal in June due to his lack of first team games as Callum Robinson returns from injury having missed all games to date this year.

Mikey Johnstone also misses out due to his lack of games though, like Cannon, he hopes to move before the transfer window shuts tomorrow.

Josh Cullen is also ruled out through injury though Evan Ferguson is straight back though he has not played a game since March as he recovers from an ankle injury.

The Irish Sun will host its first live football preview event before the Republic of Ireland take on old rivals England.
