Former Republic of Ireland player Aiden McGeady has decided to retire from football at the age of 38.
The talented winger won over 93 caps for Ireland and represented the Boys in Green at two European Championships in 2012 and 2016. McGeady scored five goals for Ireland.
On the club side, McGeady played for the likes of Celtic, Spartak Moscow, Everton, Charlton Athletic, Hibernian, Sunderland, and Ayr United in Scotland.
However, after 20 years in professional football, McGeady feels now is the best time to walk away from the game.
Writing on social media, McGeady explained that there were so many special moments in his football journey, but playing for Celtic was a big highlight.
“Football has given me so much, and getting to play the game I loved at the top level is the stuff dreams are made of. I truly lived that dream every day on the pitch,” he said in a statement on social media via the 42.ie
“There are so many memories, too many to mention, but getting to pull on the famous green and white Celtic jersey, the team I supported, was extremely special.
“Playing in the Champions League and the individual honours I received there in front of those amazing fans are some of the most memorable moments of my life.
“I’ve been lucky enough to play for so many great teams in England, Scotland, and Russia; brilliant memories at the best clubs.”
