Stephanie Meadow opened her Shoprite LPGA Classic with a two-under 69 but such is the low scoring at Seaview’s Bay Course she is sitting on the cut mark heading into the second round.
Meadow started well with birdies on the third and fifth holes but slowed up on the back nine somewhat with a bogey on 14 cancelled out by a late birdie on 17.
Thailand’s Arpichaya Yubol leads the way on ten-under after a sensational 61.
Yubol briefly flirted with a magical 59. Needing an eagle on her finishing hole, the par-5 9th she was only able to par it.
The only player on the LPGA Tour to shoot a sub-60 round was Annika Sorenstam in 2001.
“I think a little bit, because like last two hole I do 10-under already, right?” Yubol said about the prospect of shooting 59. “I think I can do more, like birdie, birdie.”
Yubol admitted she is full of confidence after weekend rounds of 69, 69 at the US Women’s Open gave her her maiden top-10 on the LPGA Tour.
“I feel like my confidence is coming back from last week in the U.S. Women’s Open. It was the greatest week in my life and then it’s make me more confident for this week,” Yubol said after her round on Friday. “I just talk with [my manager] and he made me more confident and by doing good last week it made me happy this week. I feel like my happy golf is coming back.
“When I think bad, he clear my mind,” Yubol said about her conversations with her manager. “And he believes in me a lot and try to talk with me a lot like, ‘I believe in you, so you should believe yourself, too.’”
