Met Éireann is predicting plummeting temperatures this week with night-time values dipping to almost zero at times, according to their latest weather forecast.
The news follows a brutal weekend, particularly in the south of the country, after heavy rain led to flooding around Cork and Waterford.
It’s not all bad news this week as we will see some sun, but it is set to feel a lot colder from midweek.
Met Éireann said: “A mix of sunny spells and scattered showers [on Monday], some heavy. Rain will develop in the southeast late in the evening. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees in a light to moderate south to southeast wind.
“Clear spells and isolated showers in most areas early tonight [Monday] but there will be cloud and outbreaks of rain in the southeast. This rain will extend further to the north and west overnight. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 12 degrees with light to moderate east to northeast winds.
“Tuesday will be mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain,” they said, adding, “the best of any sunny spells will be in the south. Some heavy showers are possible in the southeast later in the day. Highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees with light to moderate northerly winds.

Looking at midweek, Met Éireann says it will be “quite cloudy on Wednesday morning, with outbreaks of rain mainly in the northwest and southeast. It will become drier and brighter as the day goes on with sunny spells developing in many areas. Highest temperatures of 9 to 14 degrees with a light to moderate northerly breeze.
“Clear spells and scattered showers, mainly in the north and west [on Wednesday night]. Some showers are possible near the east coast too, where it will be cloudier. It will be colder than recent nights, with lows of 3 to 7 degrees, in a light to moderate northwesterly wind.
“[On Thursday], it will be mostly dry with sunny spells but a few showers will drift into the north and northwest on a light to moderate north to northwest breeze. Cool, with temperatures reaching between 8 and 12 degrees.
“Mostly dry and clear but cloud will increase in the north and northwest later [on Thursday night], bringing some showers. Cold with temperatures dropping to between 1 and 6 degrees, in a light to moderate west to northwest breeze.
“Cloudy with scattered showers in the north and west but drier with sunny spells in other areas [on Friday]. Highest temperatures of 9 to 13 degrees.”
The Met Éireann outlook for next weekend reads: “Continuing cool and showery on Saturday with occasional sunny spells, then turning cloudier with rain or showers on Sunday.”
