Finding your style as a young woman can be difficult, but finding it while growing up in the spotlight — with paparazzi following your every move — seems quite impossible. “My style has changed immensely over the years, even worse it’s changed in front of everyone’s eyes!” Millie Bobby Brown says. “I’ll never get to live some of my looks down — they live on the internet forever.”

Now 20 and recently married, the Stranger Things and Enola Holmes star is stepping into her own through her fashion choices and her business decisions. She has her own fashion and beauty brand — florence by mills — which covers everything from your skincare to clothing for your four-legged friends, no doubt inspired by her own puppy Winnie.

“My style was dictated by stylists, companies and magazines in the past, but when I started florence by mills apparel I really stepped into myself,” she says. “I could make those executive decisions on what I would wear, and what my generation would wear, and I felt like I had found my new voice in fashion. It was a really special coming-of-age moment.”

Florence by mills is Gen Z: it sells cute-coloured pimple patches which have become a must have of the generation (Brown even sports one during our video call). The clothing seems to focus on comfort first, a memo that millennials like me missed as we squeezed into bandage dresses and sky-high heels.

I want every girl to love themselves and stand in who they are

The florence by mills ethos is ‘to truly love and express yourself’, a mantra Brown attributes to her great-grandmother Florence, who inspired the company name. “I had never met my great-grandmother Florence, but all I had ever heard was that we were similar — she was free-spirited and said exactly what was on her mind. She stood in who she was proudly. I realised I’m very lucky to feel strong in who I am and I’m proud of the person I am. I’m still changing and learning. My fundamentals and morals are something I’m really proud of and I try to stand in that. I want every girl to love themselves and stand in who they are.

“I would love everyone to take a piece of my great-grandmother’s magic and be able to have that to themselves. There’s so many influences from the outside world and social media, it’s dragging people away from self-love and body positivity. I think florence by mills is pushing back on that narrative and pushing girls toward loving themselves and standing in their power. All of our products, whether that be beauty, fashion, eyewear, they’re not wearing you, you’re wearing them. You bring them to life, you make them beautiful, not the other way around.”

Now florence by mills is collaborating with Specsavers on a collection of 10 frames.

“[For] the majority of my life, eyewear has been a huge part of it. Sunglasses help me remain incognito, and optical glasses because I needed them to see,” Brown says with a laugh. “I grew up in London and spent a huge chunk of my life there so Specsavers was the place to go.”
